Fidelity Moves to Stake 100% of ETH ETF Holdings

Fidelity amended FETH to stake up to 100% of its $898M Ethereum fund. Privacy coins XMR and ZEC diverge sharply from ETH's 35% YTD loss.

August 14, 2026

Key Points

  • Fidelity amended its Ethereum Fund (FETH) on August 10 to stake up to 100% of its $898 million in ETH holdings, with 85% of rewards flowing to shareholders.
  • Monero surged 12.38% on the week to $397.19 and Zcash hit $490.74, both structurally decoupled from ETH's 35% year-to-date decline as shielded transaction volume expands sharply.
  • Ripple transferred 50 million XRP worth $50.5 million to an unknown wallet on August 13 as weekly XRP ETF inflows collapsed 93% to just $1.01 million — watch the $1.01 price level and the Binance futures open interest hit of 435.1 million tokens for the next directional signal.

Ethereum is trading at $1,884.75 this morning — back below the $1,900 line it briefly reclaimed after Wednesday's CPI data — but the most consequential Ethereum story today is not on the price chart. It is in an SEC EDGAR filing from August 10, where Fidelity quietly amended its $898 million Ethereum Fund to seek approval to stake up to 100% of its holdings, a structural change that would convert a passive price-exposure vehicle into a yield-bearing instrument and rewrite the investment case for ETH ETFs entirely.

Fidelity's FETH Filing Changes the ETH ETF Math

The mechanics of Fidelity's amendment are straightforward, and the implications are significant. Under the proposed structure, FETH would stake its ETH holdings through approved providers, retain 85% of staking rewards for fund shareholders, and distribute the remaining value as quarterly cash once the SEC greenlights the amendment. At current Ethereum staking yields — which have ranged between 3% and 5% annualized depending on network conditions — an 85% pass-through on a $898 million fund would generate between roughly $23 million and $38 million annually in additional shareholder value, above and beyond price appreciation or depreciation. That is not a rounding error for institutional allocators comparing ETH ETF options.
The timing is deliberately calibrated to a more permissive regulatory environment. SEC Chair Paul Atkins has made streamlining crypto fund structures a stated priority, and the same August 14 open meeting that could advance the "Regulation Crypto Assets" startup exemption framework also represents the clearest signal yet that staking amendments will receive serious consideration. Spot Ether ETFs collectively hold approximately $13.7 billion in AUM. If Fidelity's amendment receives approval and competitors follow — which is the logical outcome — staking yields could meaningfully compress the valuation gap between holding ETH directly and holding it through a regulated wrapper. That matters for institutional demand at the margin.
The near-term ETH flow picture, however, remains choppy. U.S. spot Ether ETFs recorded 26,060 ETH in net inflows on August 7, followed by outflows of approximately 7,650 ETH on August 10 and a further 908 ETH on August 11. The pattern — a single large inflow day followed by two consecutive outflow sessions — is consistent with tactical position trimming rather than a structural exit. Ethereum at $1,884 is down roughly 35% in 2026 and more than 50% from its 2025 peak near $5,000. The Fidelity filing does not fix those numbers today, but it does provide a forward-looking fundamental anchor that pure spot price analysis cannot offer.

Privacy Coins Are Running a Different Race

The most striking divergence in crypto markets this week has nothing to do with Bitcoin or Ethereum. Monero is trading at $397.19, up 12.38% on the week, in a move that has decisively broken the coin's correlation with the broader market's multi-month bleed. Zcash at $490.74 has posted annualized gains exceeding 400% from its lows, and Monero has now taken out its 2021 all-time high at a moment when BTC and ETH are both touching multi-month lows. These are not meme-driven pumps. The underlying data supports a structural thesis.
Approximately 28% of Zcash's total circulating supply now sits in shielded addresses — wallets using the protocol's zero-knowledge proof privacy layer — and more than a third of all ZEC transactions now touch the private layer in some form. That adoption rate represents a meaningful increase from levels seen 18 months ago and suggests the privacy use case is broadening beyond a narrow cohort of technical users. Monero's network, which offers privacy by default rather than as an opt-in feature, has similarly seen transaction volume rise in the current period of regulatory uncertainty. The Bank of Russia's draft directive published August 11 — which would allow retail investors to trade digital assets through licensed intermediaries subject to a 300,000-ruble annual cap — adds a geopolitical dimension: in jurisdictions where capital controls tighten, privacy coin utility is not theoretical.
Hyperliquid at $57.49 is the year's other clean outlier, up approximately 120% year-to-date and running alongside TRON as one of the only major crypto assets in materially positive territory for 2026. The rest of the major altcoin complex tells a more familiar story: BNB at $610.51 is essentially flat on the session, XRP at $1.01 has lost 45% year-to-date, Solana at $76.24 continues to trade in a narrow range well below its 2025 highs, and DOGE at $0.07 has given back most of its speculative premium from prior cycles. The altcoin market is not rotating — it is bifurcating, with a small number of assets with distinct use-case narratives running away from the field while the broad middle bleeds out.

XRP's Conflicting Signals and What Comes Next

XRP at $1.01 is generating conflicting signals that are worth parsing carefully before drawing conclusions. On August 13, Ripple transferred 50 million XRP — approximately $50.5 million at current prices — to an unknown wallet, with 1 million of those tokens subsequently moving to Binance. Large on-chain transfers from Ripple's wallets to exchanges have historically been interpreted as potential sell pressure, though the company has consistently described such movements as routine treasury operations. The market's immediate reaction was muted, but the transfer comes at a structurally sensitive moment.
Weekly net inflows into U.S. spot XRP ETFs collapsed 93% for the week ending August 8, dropping from $14.86 million to just $1.01 million. That is a sharp deterioration in institutional appetite by any measure. Yet the on-chain picture for large holders is sending the opposite signal: whale wallets are absorbing more than 10 million XRP per day, large holders account for 91% of total exchange outflows — meaning the big money is taking XRP off exchanges, not depositing it — and Binance XRP futures open interest hit a 30-day high of 435.1 million tokens on August 12, with the 30-day Z-Score at approximately 1.20. Elevated futures open interest combined with exchange outflows typically precedes a directional move; the question is whether the Ripple transfer and the ETF flow collapse represent distribution by insiders into whale demand, or whether the whale accumulation is front-running a catalyst that the ETF market has not yet priced.
The security risk environment adds a further note of caution. A crypto whale lost $25.6 million in the current period after an attacker drained their wallet, with stolen assets swapped into DAI and ETH — a transaction pattern consistent with a sophisticated phishing or approval exploit. Crucially, the same wallet had lost $24.2 million to a phishing attack in September 2023. Large holders operating without institutional-grade custody infrastructure remain acutely vulnerable, and losses of this scale at individual wallet addresses are a periodic reminder that on-chain accumulation data must be interpreted alongside security risk. For traders positioning in XRP specifically, the $1.01 price level is both a psychological threshold and a technical one — a sustained break below $1.00 on volume would be the clearest signal that the 45% year-to-date loss is not yet finished. Watch the Binance futures open interest figure and the next weekly XRP ETF flow data on August 15 for the first post-Ripple-transfer read on institutional sentiment. If inflows recover toward the prior $14.86 million weekly run rate while open interest stays elevated, the setup tilts toward a short-squeeze. If outflows accelerate, the $0.95 zone is the next structural support worth marking.
