Reddit Crashes 13% Despite Blowout Q2 Beat

Reddit crushed Q2 estimates with 61% revenue growth, yet shares plunged 13% on one phrase about Google search traffic. Here's what traders need to know.

August 3, 2026

Key Points

  • Reddit reported Q2 EPS of $1.25 vs. $0.95 expected and revenue of $805M vs. $730M expected, a 61% year-over-year surge — yet shares fell roughly 13% on Friday.
  • CEO Steve Huffman's disclosure that "search referrals were choppy" exposed the market's core anxiety: Reddit's user growth engine runs on Google's algorithm, not its own.
  • Watch whether RDDT stabilizes above its pre-earnings base this week; a failure to hold that level signals the selloff is structural, not a one-day overreaction.

Reddit delivered one of the cleanest beat-and-raise quarters of the entire earnings season — and the market punished it anyway. Q2 revenue hit $805M against a $730M consensus, net income tripled to $253M from $89M a year ago, and Q3 guidance of $860M–$870M sailed past the $828M analyst estimate. None of it mattered once CEO Steve Huffman mentioned that search referral traffic had been "choppy."

The Numbers That Should Have Worked

The headline figures were unambiguous. Reddit's Q2 2026 report showed EPS of $1.25 crushing the $0.95 consensus — a 32% beat. Revenue of $805M represented 61% year-over-year growth from $500M in Q2 2025, the kind of acceleration that most platform companies would trade their entire executive teams to produce. Net income of $253M, or $1.25 per share, compared to $89M, or $0.45 per share, a year earlier, represents a 184% earnings expansion in a single year. By virtually every conventional metric, this was a near-perfect quarter.
The guidance was equally compelling. Q3 revenue of $860M–$870M implies roughly 50% year-over-year growth at the midpoint and beat the $828M Street consensus by more than $35M. That is not the guidance of a company that sees its momentum stalling. Reddit has also been executing on its data licensing business — deals with AI training companies that monetize the platform's decade-plus archive of human conversation — which provides a revenue stream that is structurally independent of daily active user counts or advertiser spend cycles. That diversification was supposed to be a bull case reinforcer, not a story footnote.

One Sentence That Erased Billions

It wasn't a data point buried in a footnote. Huffman addressed search referral traffic directly in the investor letter, describing it as "choppy" — and the market moved instantly. Shares dropped more than 13% in early Friday trading, erasing more than a billion dollars in market capitalization in hours, making it one of the sharpest single-session post-earnings selloffs of the summer for a large-cap technology name.
The reason the reaction was so violent comes down to what Reddit is, structurally, as an acquisition machine. Unlike Meta, which has built direct notification loops, app-native engagement funnels, and a paid advertising infrastructure that brings users back through its own channels, Reddit's top-of-funnel remains heavily dependent on Google search. When a user types a product question, a medical symptom, or a software troubleshooting query into Google and lands on a Reddit thread, that is not just a pageview — it is a potential account creation, a potential advertiser impression, a potential data point that feeds Reddit's AI licensing valuations. The entire monetization flywheel has Google as its first gear.
That dependency is not new information. Analysts have flagged it since Reddit's March 2024 IPO. What Huffman's letter did was confirm that the risk is active and measurable in real time, not theoretical. "Choppy" is not a word CEOs use when everything is fine. It is the word they use when they cannot yet tell you whether the problem is seasonal, algorithmic, or secular — and that uncertainty is exactly what justified the multiple compression the market delivered on Friday.

What Traders Watch Next

The critical question now is whether Friday's 13% plunge was a rational repricing of a Google-dependent growth story or an overcorrection in a momentum-driven tape that will reverse once cooler heads read the actual income statement. Both interpretations have merit, which is precisely why the next two to three weeks of trading action in RDDT will be so instructive.
Monday's broader market tone offers some context: SPY futures are up 0.35%, QQQ is up 0.26%, and small-caps are leading with IWM up 0.55%, suggesting a risk-on environment that would normally be favorable for a high-growth platform name. If RDDT cannot rally meaningfully in a tape this constructive, that is a signal the damage is more than sentiment-driven. The stock needs to reclaim its pre-earnings close to neutralize the technical damage; failure to do so within the next five sessions sets up the next leg lower as momentum traders who held through earnings begin exiting.
The forward earnings picture remains genuinely strong. Analysts covering Reddit will need to revise their models to reflect Q2 upside and the Q3 guide, which mechanically implies higher price targets for anyone using a revenue multiple framework. The information technology sector is up more than 16% year-to-date in 2026, and the full-year earnings growth consensus for the S&P 500 sits at 29.1%. Reddit is growing revenue at twice that rate. The fundamental bull case has not broken.
What has broken is the trust premium that investors were paying for Reddit's uninterrupted Google-driven growth narrative. Rebuilding that premium requires either a public clarification from management on the scope and duration of the search traffic choppiness, a Q3 print that shows re-acceleration in user metrics, or a Google algorithm update that demonstrably favors Reddit content again. The next scheduled earnings date — expected in late October — is the hard deadline. Between now and then, any company filing or investor conference appearance from Huffman that addresses search traffic will be a tradeable event. The specific level to watch: if RDDT fails to hold the $200 area through this week's close, technical support thins quickly toward the $185 range, where the stock consolidated before its most recent breakout.
