NEAR +12%, QNT +18%: Altcoin Rotation Accelerates

NEAR Protocol surges 12% and QNT jumps 18% as altcoin rotation accelerates. ETH exchange inflows hit 125K and a key October 6 upgrade looms.

October 1, 2026

Key Points

  • NEAR Protocol surged 12.05% on October 1 and leads all majors with a 16.43% seven-day gain, while QNT jumped 18.07% on the session — both outperforming Bitcoin's 0.1% weekly move by a wide margin.
  • Ethereum faces a specific on-chain warning: approximately 125,000 ETH moved onto exchanges recently, a supply signal that historically precedes selling pressure, as the Coinbase Premium Index turned negative and daily spot ETF inflows collapsed from last week's highs.
  • The October 6 Ethereum speed-focused test upgrade and Friday's payrolls data are the two events that will determine whether ETH's $2,775–$2,825 resistance breaks or the $2,500 level comes into play.

NEAR Protocol hit $5.46 on Thursday, up 12.05% in a single session and 16.43% over seven days — the strongest performance in the entire large-cap altcoin complex. QNT moved even harder on the day, posting an 18.07% gain on Investing.com's live tape. Both moves arrived on a morning when Bitcoin added just 0.9% and Ethereum managed 2.10%, making the dispersion between the market's flagship assets and its second-tier protocols the defining story of October 1.

The Rotation Trade Is Live

The pattern developing across Thursday's tape is textbook late-cycle altcoin rotation: capital that entered the market through Bitcoin ETFs during the record $23.9 billion inflow week of September 21–25 is now moving down the risk curve toward higher-beta, lower-liquidity assets. NEAR and QNT are the clearest expressions of that move today, but the trend has breadth. Chainlink gained 16.20% over the past seven days. Stellar added 9.01% on the week. Even DOGE, which rarely leads on fundamentals, printed a 2.85% gain Thursday while XRP — the asset that attracted $75.6 million in ETF inflows over four sessions last week — barely moved at 0.76%.
NEAR's specific driver on October 1 is not immediately tied to a single protocol announcement, which makes the move both more interesting and more suspect. When an asset surges 12% without a named catalyst, the move typically reflects one of three things: a large OTC buyer moving into spot markets, a short squeeze in perpetual futures, or early positioning ahead of a forthcoming announcement. Until NEAR crosses $6.00 and holds it on meaningful volume, the 12% single-session gain carries the same risk profile as any momentum spike in a thin market — it can retrace as fast as it appeared. The seven-day figure of 16.43%, however, suggests this is not purely a one-day event.
QNT's 18.07% session gain deserves its own analysis. Quant Network's token has historically moved in sharp, discrete bursts tied to enterprise blockchain partnership announcements or developer activity milestones. The token's relatively small float amplifies any directional buying, and 18% in a session places it well outside normal daily volatility bands. Traders chasing QNT at these levels should note that the move has already occurred — entry now means buying into a spike without knowing the catalyst, in an asset where the ask side of the order book thins rapidly above recent range highs.

Ethereum's Structural Problem

Ethereum's 2.10% Thursday gain looks constructive on the surface. At $2,716.89, ETH is up 1.18% on the week and has posted a 9.99% one-month gain — numbers that would look impressive if the one-year figure weren't negative 39.40%. The coin is trading inside a well-defined technical range: support at $2,620–$2,660 below and resistance at $2,775–$2,825 above. Neither level has broken decisively in recent sessions, which means ETH is consolidating rather than trending.
The on-chain data is where the picture deteriorates. Approximately 125,000 ETH moved onto major exchanges in a recent monitoring window — a supply dynamic that typically precedes selling pressure, since coins moving onto exchanges are generally positioned for liquidation rather than long-term storage. That signal arrived simultaneously with a negative turn in the Coinbase Premium Index, which measures the price differential between Coinbase and global reference prices. A negative premium means U.S.-based buyers — historically the marginal institutional buyer — are less aggressive than offshore markets, a subtle but meaningful shift in demand composition. Daily spot ETF inflows have also dropped sharply from last week's highs, and the seven-day Ethereum ETF inflow streak that brought in roughly $850.8 million ended with a $2.81 million net outflow on September 29.
Whale rotation from BTC to ETH is visible on-chain, which provides some structural support. But the rotation trade needs a specific catalyst to convert into price appreciation, and the timing may not be favorable. Total Ethereum ETF net assets stand at $17.69 billion, equal to 5.40% of ETH's market cap — a smaller institutional penetration rate than Bitcoin's 6.42%, which means the ETF bid is thinner and the market is more sensitive to organic selling. Bitcoin and Ethereum ETF flows both remain structurally supported by the SEC's new accelerated listing framework and the GENIUS Act's stablecoin clarity, but structural support does not prevent tactical retracements.

October 6 and the XRP Reversal Pattern

The most specific near-term event for Ethereum traders is October 6, five days away, when the network is scheduled to implement a speed-focused test upgrade targeting improved transaction capacity and settlement performance. Ethereum upgrades have historically produced a "buy the rumor, sell the news" dynamic, and the current setup — exchange inflows elevated, premium index negative, ETF inflows decelerating — suggests the market may be positioning for exactly that outcome. A clean daily close above $2,775 before October 6 would meaningfully change that calculus, but it has not happened yet. If the upgrade fails to deliver a sustained demand catalyst, the path to $2,500 and the 200-day EMA near $2,272 becomes the base case.
XRP's October 1 session produced one of the more instructive single-candle patterns in the altcoin complex. The token cleared the $1.5495 swing high intraday, reached $1.5603, and then reversed the entire move to close near $1.49–$1.50 — a 3.95% decline from the session high that left an upper wick accounting for 76% of the total session range. That structure is a textbook bearish engulfment signal at a prior resistance level. The $75.6 million in XRP ETF inflows during the week of September 22–25 provided the fuel for the attempted breakout; the failure to hold above $1.5495 signals that sellers absorbed that demand entirely. XRP needs a daily close above $1.56 on volume to invalidate the pattern; absent that, the path of least resistance points back toward the $1.38–$1.42 support cluster.
Solana at $119.19 — up 0.95% Thursday — remains the quieter but arguably more structurally sound altcoin position. Daily ETF net inflows of $12.70 million and cumulative net assets of $1.93 billion suggest institutional allocation is still building in SOL at a pace proportionally comparable to early-stage Bitcoin ETF adoption. BCH's 7-day loss of 10.39% and AVAX's 2.59% single-session decline reflect the other side of the rotation: capital leaving legacy chains without clear upgrade narratives. Ethereum's current price action and the broader altcoin complex will face their next decisive test when October 6 arrives and Friday's payrolls data resets the macro risk appetite that underlies every position in this market.
