ETH Outperforms BTC With 11% Weekly Surge

Ethereum jumps 11% in seven days as Robinhood Chain burns $800M daily in gas and BlackRock's ETF pulls in $96M in three days.

July 16, 2026

Key Points

  • Ethereum is up 10.70% over seven days to $1,923.79, decisively outrunning Bitcoin's 4.03% weekly gain as concrete demand drivers stack on both the on-chain and institutional sides.
  • Robinhood Chain's layer-2 network, live since July 1, is processing more than $800 million a day in transactions that burn ETH for gas, while BlackRock's spot Ether ETF absorbed $96 million in the first three days of this week alone.
  • ETH must close above the 100-day EMA at $1,960.21 to open a path toward the 200-day EMA at $2,242.04 — the level that separates a tactical bounce from a structural trend reversal.

Ethereum is outrunning every major asset in crypto this week, up 10.70% over seven days to $1,923.79 as of Wednesday morning — a gain more than double Bitcoin's 4.03% weekly advance. The move is not sentiment-driven noise: two discrete, measurable demand sources emerged in the past 15 days that did not exist before, and institutional money is rotating toward them with unusual speed.

The Demand Drivers Are Real This Time

Start with Robinhood Chain. The Robinhood-backed Ethereum layer-2 network went live July 1 and is already processing more than $800 million a day in transaction volume, the overwhelming majority of it memecoin trading. Every transaction on that network requires ETH for gas, meaning the chain is generating sustained, programmatic buy pressure on Ether that is entirely independent of macro sentiment or Bitcoin's price action. That is a structural demand source — not a one-day news spike — and the market is beginning to price it accordingly.
The ETF side is equally tangible. U.S. spot Ether ETFs absorbed $96 million in the first three trading days of this week, with the flows heavily concentrated in BlackRock's low-fee product. Grayscale's higher-fee Ethereum trust continues to hemorrhage assets, which means the net institutional picture is a rotation from expensive legacy wrappers into efficient, institutional-grade vehicles — a pattern that mirrors exactly what happened in Bitcoin ETFs during early 2024 and preceded a sustained price move. The divergence between BlackRock inflows and Grayscale outflows is the signal; the net number understates the directional conviction of the marginal buyer.
The ETH/BTC ratio has also strengthened this week, a data point traders treat as a confidence gauge for the broader altcoin market. When ETH outperforms Bitcoin on a sustained basis — not just a single session — it historically signals that risk appetite is expanding beyond Bitcoin's store-of-value narrative into productive, yield-bearing, gas-burning blockchain infrastructure. That rotation is early-stage here, but it is measurable.

The Technical Picture and What Is Actually in the Way

Ether's intraday range today ran from $1,875.00 to $1,938.65, and the 24-hour volume of $11.68 billion is running above its recent trend — a constructive sign that buyers are not fading as price approaches resistance. The critical near-term level is the 100-day exponential moving average at $1,960.21. ETH has already reclaimed the 50-day EMA at $1,801.25, which it was trading below for most of June, and a close above $1,960 would confirm that the medium-term trend has shifted from distribution to accumulation.
Above that, the 200-day EMA at $2,242.04 is the real wall. That level has acted as resistance since February, and getting there would require an additional 16.5% move from current prices. It is achievable if Robinhood Chain volumes sustain and ETF flows continue, but traders should not chase this move into $1,960 without acknowledging the risk that one bad macro session — a hot inflation print, a credit event, any risk-off impulse — could snap ETH back below the 50-day EMA quickly. Crypto correlations to equities remain elevated at this stage of the cycle.
The broader altcoin market is not confirming ETH's strength in a meaningful way. Solana is down 0.27% today at $77.14. XRP is barely positive at $1.11. BNB is flat. The strength is concentrated in Ethereum specifically, not diffused across the market, which argues for precision over a broad altcoin basket trade.

What Traders Watch Next

The CLARITY Act hearing scheduled for Thursday is the binary event that could either accelerate ETH's move or introduce a sharp reversal. The legislation, which would establish clearer jurisdictional boundaries between the SEC and CFTC for digital assets, has direct implications for Ethereum specifically — a formal CFTC designation for ETH as a commodity would remove the single largest regulatory overhang that has suppressed institutional allocation since 2022. If the hearing produces any concrete forward guidance on that classification, expect the ETF inflow data to move sharply the following session.
Regulatory momentum has been building across multiple jurisdictions in parallel: Japan's Upper House committee approved legislation this week to reclassify cryptocurrencies as financial instruments and lower crypto taxes to a flat 20%, paving the way for spot crypto ETFs as early as 2027. Japan is the world's third-largest economy, and that structural demand pipeline — still 12 to 18 months from materializing — is already influencing how institutional desks model their ETH position sizing. The FCA's final UK crypto framework, published June 30 with implementation set for October 25, 2027, adds another layer to that medium-term demand case.
The immediate trade is simpler: ETH at $1,923.79 is testing the 100-day EMA at $1,960.21 from below. A clean daily close above that level, on volume above $11 billion, changes the medium-term bias from neutral to constructive and opens a measured move toward $2,100 — roughly the midpoint between current price and the 200-day EMA at $2,242.04. A failure to close above $1,960 by end of week, particularly if it coincides with disappointing CLARITY Act headlines on Thursday, puts the $1,801.25 50-day EMA back in play as support. Size accordingly.
